Kronos Institute Statin Pilot Study
Snapshot
Kronos Institute Statin Pilot Study: Statins are cholesterol lowering drugs that decrease the risk for cardiovascular disease. However, statins lower coenzyme Q10, a vitamin that is important for aerobic energy production and hence, normal muscle function. Many patients who take statins complain of muscle aches, cramps, and weakness. KLRI recently performed a pilot study showing a high dose of a commonly used statin to have little or no deleterious effect on exercise capacity and skeletal muscle function during mild and moderate exercise in older adults who did not experience muscle symptoms.
